One poet wanted to be a serious loser to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. But I guided him properly.



In the afternoon, I was sitting on the porch and eating Jhuribhaja of Square Company.



Then a boy came and asked for my identity. I introduced myself. After introducing me, the boy said, “Sir, I am from Shantipur. I have a plan to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. I have come to you to discuss that.”



Any writer can have an expectation for the Nobel Prize in Literature, that is not crime. So I said, “You want the Nobel Prize in Literature, it’s not wrong. But why did you come to me?”



The boy then smiled and said, “I think you too can win the Nobel Prize in Literature in the future.”



I smiled a little and said, “Why do you think so?”



The boy said, “Sir, if anyone read your writing, can easily understand anything in a short time. Even if anyone read ten, twenty or even fifty pages of other Nobel laureate writers in literature, it is easier to understand your reading than just a few pages.I think, as far as the writer received the Nobel Prize in literature, compared with their writing, your writing value will not be less.”



I said, “Thank you very much. I write good quality writing. I write the main thing without extra words and descriptions. So any busy person including other writers, politicians can read my writing and understand the main content in a short time.”



Boy:- Yes sir, it is also possible to write big books with the theme of your short writing.



I: – Of course. However, I am not eager to win the Nobel Prize in Literature.



The boy asked in surprise, “Why sir?”



I said, “Not only in literature, but in other things as well, the Nobel Committee is not obliged to give him the Nobel Prize. Ravi Tagore was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, but why not Count Tolstoy? Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela Nobel Peace Prize. There is no correct answer to the question of why Mahatma Gandhi was not awarded the prize, and the Nobel Committee is not obliged to comment on it. And I don’t write for the Nobel Prize. Rather, I write to the welfare of the people and by following of the previous wises. But if someone gives good things, I will accept it.”



The boy was a little disappointed and said, “I thought if you get the Nobel Prize in Literature, next time I will get the Nobel Prize in Literature too. But I was a little disappointed in your words.”



I said, “I did not forbid you to study literature.”



The boy then said, “That’s right, sir. There’s no reason I shouldn’t do it because you don’t expect the Nobel Prize. I’ll stick to my plan to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. And that’s what I’ve come to discuss with you.”



I: – What are your plans?



Boy: – I will write for the Nobel Prize and sell the land in the form of books.



I: – How?



The boy: – I got the land from my father. I will publish my book of poems with the money from the sale of that land. And after reading that book, the Nobel Committee will give me the Nobel Prize in Literature.



I: – I will never forbid you. But I must say that your plan is wrong and deadly.



Boy: – What a terrible mistake.



I: – If you sell your land for an uncertain subject like the Nobel Prize, you will be more likely to be destitute in the future.



Boy: – Sir, I agree with your various writings but I could not agree on this. Can you prove it?



I then said firmly, “Of course.”



The boy wondered, “How?”



I said, “I have to go to your Shantipur to prove it.”



The boy said enthusiastically, “Then let’s go to our Shantipur.”



I came to Shantipur with the boy and said, “Whatever I tell you to do, you will do. Only then will you get proof.”



I said, “First you go to the grocery store and say, ‘ I am a poet. It’s my job to write poetry. Give me half the price of rice, pulses, oil, salt, spices and soap.’ And I’ll be with you then.”



Hearing this, he went to the grocery store. When he said that to the shopkeeper, the shopkeeper said, “You write poetry, what happened to me? Many people know your name because of writing poetry, so why should I give you the product at half price? Does the company give me the product at half price? No, I can’t afford to pay half the price. “





Then one by one he went to the fish market, to the food hotel, to the barber’s saloon, to the pharmacy and to the cosmetics shop. Everyone said almost the same thing.



Then the boy sitting under a tree with me said, “Sir, I thought people would give me free products for writing poetry. But now I see that they are not giving me products for even half the price. So far I have been in error. Today, I can not find additional benefits in real life if I write poetry.”



I smiled and said, “Now understand, what would have happened to you if you had sold land and printed a book of poetry? How the book would have been sold is uncertain? And it would have been more difficult to win the Nobel Prize through that book. Ravi Tagore was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1913. But until 1913 he was awarded the Nobel Prize at his own expense.It is suitable to the all Nobel Laureate.So I say, make sure your basic needs are somewhat. Then practice literature. You can be hopeful for a reward. But it is not cherished and do not destroy yourself.”



Then the boy said, “Sir, I will keep your word to the letter.”

এক কবি সাহিত্যে নোবেল প্রাইজ পেতে মারাত্মক ক্ষতিগ্রস্থ হতে চেয়েছিল। কিন্তু আমি তাকে সঠিকভাবে গাইড করেছিলাম।



বিকাল বেলা বারান্দায় বসে স্কয়ার কোম্পানির ঝুরিভাজা খাচ্ছিলাম।



তখন একটা ছেলে এসে আমার পরিচয় চাইল। আমি পরিচয় দিলাম। আমার পরিচয় দেয়ার পর ছেলেটা বলল, ” স্যার, আমি শান্তিপুর থেকে এসেছি। আমি সাহিত্যে নোবেল প্রাইজ পেতে একটা পরিকল্পনা করেছি। সেই বিষয়ে আলোচনা করতে আপনার কাছে এসেছি। “



সাহিত্যে নোবেল প্রাইজের জন্য যে কোন লেখকের প্রত্যাশা থাকতেই পারে। তাই আমি বললাম, ” তুমি সাহিত্যে নোবেল প্রাইজ পেতে চাও, এটা কোন অন্যায় না। কিন্তু আমার কাছে কেন এসেছ ? “



ছেলেটা তখন মুচকি হেসে বলল, ” আমার মনে হয়, আপনিও ভবিষ্যতে সাহিত্যে নোবেল প্রাইজ পেতে পারেন। “



আমি তখন আরেকটু মুচকি হেসে বললাম, ” তোমার এমনটা মনে হল কেন ? “



ছেলেটা বলল, ” স্যার, আপনার লেখা পাঠ করলে যে কোন বিষয় অল্প সময়ে সহজেই বুঝা যায়। এমনকি সাহিত্যে নোবেল বিজয়ী অন্যান্য লেখকের দশ, বিশ এমনকি পঞ্চাশ পৃষ্ঠা পড়লে যা বুঝা যায়, আপনার লেখা মাত্র কয়েকটা পৃষ্ঠা পড়লেই আরো সহজে বেশি বুঝা যায়। আমার মনে হয়, এই পর্যন্ত যত লেখক সাহিত্যে নোবেল প্রাইজ পেয়েছেন, তাদের লেখার সঙ্গে তুলনা করলে আপনার লেখার মান কোনভাবেই কম হবেনা।”



আমি বললাম, ” তোমাকে অনেক ধন্যবাদ। আমি উন্নতমানের লেখাই লিখি। অতিরিক্ত কথা ও বর্ণনা না করে মূল কথাটাই আমি লিখি। তাই আমার লেখা অন্যান্য লেখক, রাজনীতিকসহ যে কোন ব্যস্ত মানুষ অল্প সময়েই পড়তে পেরে মূল বিষয়বস্তু বুঝতে পারেন। “



ছেলেটা :- জ্বী স্যার, আপনার একেকটা সংক্ষিপ্ত লেখার থিম দিয়ে বড় বড় বই লেখাও সম্ভব।



আমি :- অবশ্যই। তবে আমি সাহিত্যে নোবেল প্রাইজ পেতে লালায়িত না।



ছেলেটা অবাক হয়ে জিজ্ঞেস করল, ” কেন স্যার ? “



আমি বললাম, ” শুধু সাহিত্যে না, বরং অন্যান্য বিষয়েও যে যত ভালোই করুক, নোবেল কমিটি কিন্তু তাকে নোবেল প্রাইজ দিতে বাধ্য না। রবি ঠাকুরকে সাহিত্যে নোবেল প্রাইজ দেয়া হল, অথচ কাউন্ট টলস্টয়কে কেন দেয়া হলনা ? মার্টিন লুথার কিং জুনিয়র, নেলসন ম্যান্ডেলাকে শান্তিতে নোবেল প্রাইজ দেয়া হলেও মহাত্মা গান্ধিকে কেন দেয়া হল না ? এগুলোর সঠিক কোন উত্তর নাই। এবং নোবেল কমিটি এই ব্যাপারে কৈফিয়ত দিতে বাধ্যও না। আর আমি নোবেল প্রাইজের জন্য লিখিনা। বরং মানুষের কল্যাণ ও পূর্ববর্তী জ্ঞানীদের অনুসরণে আমি লিখি। তবে কেউ ভালো বিষয় দিলে অবশ্যই গ্রহণ করব। “



ছেলেটা কিছুটা হতাশ হয়ে বলল, ” আমি ভেবেছিলাম আপনি সাহিত্যে নোবেল প্রাইজ পেলে পরের বার আমিও সাহিত্যে নোবেল প্রাইজ পাব।কিন্তু আপনার কথায় আমি কিছুটা হতাশ হলাম।”



আমি তখন বললাম, ” আমি ত তোমাকে নিষেধ করিনি সাহিত্য চর্চা করতে। “



ছেলেটা তখন বলল, ” ঠিকই স্যার। আপনি নোবেল প্রাইজের আশা করেননা বলে আমাকেও যে করতে হবেনা, এমন কোন শর্ত নাই। সাহিত্যে নোবেল প্রাইজ পেতে আমি যে পরিকল্পনা করেছি, সেটাতে আমি লেগে থাকব। আর সেই ব্যাপারেই আপনার সঙ্গে আলোচনা করতে এসেছি। “



আমি :- তোমার কী পরিকল্পনা ?



ছেলেটা :- আমি জমি বিক্রি করে নোবেল প্রাইজের জন্য লিখে বই ছাপাব।



আমি :- কীভাবে ?



ছেলেটা :- বাবার কাছ থেকে আমি জমি পেয়েছি। সেই জমি বিক্রির টাকা দিয়ে আমার কবিতার বই প্রকাশ করব। আর সেই বই পড়ে আমাকে নোবেল কমিটি সাহিত্যে নোবেল প্রাইজ দিয়ে দেবে।



আমি :- তোমাকে আমি কখনই এটা নিষেধ করব না। তবে তোমার এই পরিকল্পনাটা যে ভুল এবং মারাত্মক ক্ষতিকর, সেটা আমি অবশ্যই বললব।



ছেলেটা :- কেমন মারাত্মক ভুল ?



আমি :- নোবেল প্রাইজের মত অনিশ্চিত বিষয়ের জন্য নিজের জমি বিক্রি করলে ভবিষ্যতে অভাবগ্রস্থ হওয়ার সম্ভাবনা বেশি থাকবে।



ছেলেটা :- স্যার, আপনার বিভিন্ন লেখার সঙ্গে আমি একমত হলেও এই বিষয়ে একমত হতে পারলামনা। আপনি কি এটা প্রমাণ করতে পারবেন ?



আমি তখন দৃঢ়ভাবে বললাম, ” অবশ্যই। ”



ছেলেটা আশ্চর্য হয়ে বলল, ” কীভাবে ? ”



আমি বললাম, ” এটা প্রমাণ করতে হলে আমাকে তোমাদের শান্তিপুরে যেতে হবে। ”



ছেলেটা উৎসাহের সঙ্গে বলল, ” তাহলে চলেন যাই আমাদের শান্তিপুরে। ”



ছেলেটার সঙ্গে শান্তিপুরে এসে বললাম, ” তোমাকে আমি যা কিছু করতে বলব, তুমি সেটাই করবা। তাহলেই প্রমাণ পাবে। ”



আমি বললাম, ” প্রথমে তুমি মুদির দোকানে গিয়ে বলবা, তুমি কবি। কবিতা লেখাই তোমার কাজ। তোমাকে যেন অর্ধেক দামে চাল, ডাল, তেল, লবণ, মশলা ও সাবান দেয়। আর আমি তখন তোমার সঙ্গেই থাকব। ”



এই কথা শোনে সে মুদির দোকানে গেল। দোকানদারকে সেই কথা বললে দোকানদার বলল, ” তুমি কবিতা লেখ, তাতে আমার কী হয়েছে ? কবিতা লেখার কারণে তোমার নাম অনেকেই জানে, তাই বলে তোমাকে আমি অর্ধেক দামে পণ্য দেব কেন ? কোম্পানি কি আমাকে অর্ধেক দামে পণ্য দেয় ? না, তুমি কবিতা লেখ বলে তোমাকে আমি অর্ধেক দামে পণ্য দিতে পারব না। ”





এরপর একে একে মাছ বাজারে, খাবার হোটেলে, নাপিতের সেলুনে, ফার্মেসিতে ও কসমেটিক্সের দোকানে গেল। সকলেই প্রায় একই রকম কথা বলল।



তখন আমাকে নিয়ে একটা গাছ তলায় বসে ছেলেটি বলল, ” স্যার, আমি ভাবতাম কবিতা লেখার কারণে লোকে আমাকে বিনামূল্যে পণ্য দিয়ে দেবে। অথচ এখন দেখছি অর্ধেক দামেও আমাকে পণ্য দিচ্ছেনা। এতদিন আমি ভুলের মধ্যেই ছিলাম। আজ বুঝতে পারলাম, কবিতা লিখলেই বাস্তব জীবনে অতিরিক্ত সুবিধা পাওয়া যায়না। ”



আমি মুচকি হেসে বললাম, ” এবার বুঝ, জমি বিক্রি করে কবিতার বই ছাপালে তোমার কী অবস্থা হত ? বই কেমন বিক্রি হত, সেটা অনিশ্চিত। আর সেই বইয়ের মাধ্যমে নোবেল প্রাইজ পাওয়া আরো কঠিন। তখন অভাবে পড়লে তোমার কী অবস্থা হত ? তোমাকে ত তখন অভাবের কারণে খাবার জোটাতেই ব্যাস্ত থাকতে হবে। ফলে সাহিত্য চর্চাও ঠিকমত করতে পারবেনা। এই কারণে তোমাকে নোবেল প্রাইজ দেয়া ত দূরের কথা, তোমার সম্পর্কে নোবেল কমিটি কিছু জানতেও পারবেনা। রবি ঠাকুরকে নোবেল প্রাইজ দেয়া হয়েছিল ১৯১৩ সালে। কিন্তু ১৯১৩ সাল পর্যন্ত তিনিকে নিজের খরচে খেয়ে – পড়ে চলতে হয়েছে। এমনটা সকল নোবেলজয়ীর বেলায় প্রযোজ্য। তাই বলছি, নিজের মৌলিক চাহিদা কিছুটা হলেও নিশ্চিত করে সাহিত্য চর্চা কর। আর কোন পুরস্কারের জন্য আশাবাদী হলেও লালায়িত হয়ে নিজেকে অভাবে ফেলবানা। ”



তখন ছেলিটি বলল, ” স্যার, আমি আপনার কথা অক্ষরে অক্ষরে পালন করব। ”
